Explore the magic of photography without a camera in this camp inspired by the striking photography of artist Gordon Parks! Guided by teaching artist Katie Romano, campers will experiment with various alternative photography processes using light, shadow, and object-based image-making. Campers will layer their alt-photo images with collage and text to create accordion-style books that share their own visual stories.

About the Teaching Artist: Katie Romano
Katie Romano is a Tulsa-based visual artist and photographer currently pursuing a BFA in Photography at the University of Tulsa. Her work explores identity, abstraction, and the ways we experience and inhabit space, with a strong interest in experimental and alternative photographic processes. Romano’s work has been awarded Best in Show by the University of Tulsa’s Stylus publication and has been featured in exhibitions at the McFarlin Library and Alexander Hogue Gallery. Katie is also the author of the photographic book A River Runs Through Tulsa.
In her teaching, Katie aims to create a supportive, hands-on environment where students can explore photography behind and beyond camera, experiment with materials, and learn through play. She believes making art together encourages collaboration, curiosity, and confidence; expressing ideas and cultivating unique creative voices both individually and as a part of a community.
What to Expect
A day at Camp Philbrook starts in our studios, but we quickly use the whole museum: art, gardens, etc. to explore what it means to be a creative thinker and maker. Our workshops are geared towards getting messy, working together and making space for every child’s ideas.
Here are a few things to know:
- This is a drop-off camp.
- All campers are required to be toilet trained and able to use the toilet without adult assistance.
- We offer Before and After-Care.*
- All-Day campers need to bring a peanut-free lunch from home.
- We have pretzels or Goldfish crackers as morning snack and afternoon snack built into each camp session. Campers are welcome to bring their own peanut-free snack from home if they would like.
- We use the whole museum, which means we spend ample time outside when the weather permits. Please pack a water bottle daily and arrive wearing sunscreen and bug spray.
- Your days at Philbrook will be filled with creative energy and fun! Please make sure to dress for mess and outdoor exploration.
*Before or After-Care
Before-Care or After-Care is offered for each week of Camp Philbrook for an additional $25 per Member Youth and $30 per Youth. With the addition of Before-Care to your AM Camp ticket, you may drop your child off as early as 7:45am. With the addition of After-Care to your PM Camp ticket, you may pick your child up as late as 5:30pm.
