In the Lower Spotlight Gallery, visitors can explore artists’ interpretation of independence through an installation of prints from the Kent Bicentennial Portfolio: Spirit of Independence (1975). This portfolio was issued to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the United States of America. Twelve leading contemporary artists, including Jacob Lawrence (American, 1917-2000), Marisol (American, 1930-2016), Robert Indiana (American, 1928–2018), and Fritz Scholder (American and Luiseño, 1937-2005), created works in response to the question “What does independence mean to me?” The artists considered the question within the context of their own time—a time of war, social change, and struggles for civil rights and equality. Together, the prints point to the rich and complex history of the United States, and the ongoing struggle for liberty and justice for all.
