Views of Greenwood presents nearly fifty photographs of the Greenwood District by three Oklahoma photographers who, over the last fifty years, have explored change, loss, and resilience within the neighborhood.
The Greenwood District, blocks from Downtown Tulsa, was all but destroyed during the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. Despite overwhelming devastation, Greenwood residents and business owners rebuilt. In the following decades, the neighborhood thrived—only to be knocked down again by urban renewal and other systemic barriers.
Oklahoma photographers Don Thompson, Gaylord Oscar Herron, and Eyakem Gulilat recognized these ongoing struggles and depicted the continuing history of the Greenwood District in the faces, landscapes, and moments within the community.
