Collection Spotlight: Lusha Nelson
Philbrook
Apr 24, 2019 - Sep 08, 2019
In 2015, Philbrook acquired a trove of photographs by Lusha Nelson, an all-but-forgotten photographer who had a brief, brilliant career in the 1930s. Philbrook presented Nelson’s first-ever retrospective in 2017 and continues to highlight his work. This new selection of photographs, many of which are unpublished and have never been exhibited before, features dramatic images that demonstrate Nelson’s interest in human expression. Portraits of celebrities including Jesse Owens, Marian Anderson, and Noel Coward, as well as people whose names are no longer known to us, reveal both the intimacy and the visual impact of Nelson’s photographs.
