Photography FAQ

Q:

Can I take photos at Philbrook?

A:

All museum visitors are welcome to take non-flash, personal use photography of the Museum, Collection (unless otherwise posted), and Gardens during their visit using handheld still or video cameras, under the Visitor Photography Guidelines.

Posed photography shoots, both personal and professional, are only permitted in the Gardens with the purchase of an Open-Hour Permit, After-Hours session, or Photography Membership. If you wish to conduct a posed photography session (portrait, group, prom, etc.), please contact us at 918-748-5303 or photo@philbrook.org.

Q:

What is considered a Photography Shoot/Session?

A:

Shoots that are works for hire, involve client photography, involve the exchange of money for service rendered, and/or involve posing individual or groups require a permit. The use of a tripod, monopod, lights, umbrellas, diffusers, detachable flash, multiple lenses, large bags, reflectors, props, etc. constitute professional equipment and are not permitted during regular operating hours.

Q:

I am an amateur photographer, do I have to pay a fee?

A:

Amateur photographers conducting a posed photography session must purchase either an Open-Hour Photography Permit (starting at $50/hour) or pay an After-Hour Photography Session fee (starting at $250). Please review the guidelines below or contact us at 918-748-5303 for more information.

Q:

How do I book a session?

A:

It is suggested that photography sessions are booked with 7-10 business days advance notice. All Sessions are non-exclusive and subject to availability. To check availability or to book your session, contact us at 918-748-5303 or photo@philbrook.org.

Commercial Photography & Filming

Photography and filming requests for editorial or commercial usage is approved and coordinated by Philbrook’s Communications department. Please note that as of November 2022 Philbrook has entered a freeze on editorial and rental filming due to increased campus usage and planned construction. This freeze will continue until at least 2024 in order to prioritize Museum programs and event rentals.

All commercial photo and video shoots should be requested at least two weeks in advance and require a staff member escort. Many works of art in our collection and on view are copyrighted and require special permissions to photograph and publish.

Philbrook prohibits photography or filming for commercials or advertisements on campus, except for its own benefit. We do not allow filming that implies endorsement of a business or organization.

All requests are approved on a case-by-case basis by Museum staff and Philbrook reserves the right to restrict photography and filming at any time. Requests are evaluated by the following criteria:

  • Availability of Museum staff to respond to the request
  • Security of the collection and museum operations
  • Health and safety considerations
  • Ability to complete the photography or filming with minimal disruption to staff, visitors, tours, and Museum events
  • Sensitivity to the Museum’s mission, collections, and values
  • Compliance with copyright

Requests can be sent to marketing@philbrook.org.
