Benefiting Philbrook Educational Programs
For more than fifty years, Philbrook Museum of Art has been providing quality arts education for children and adults. Appealing to a wide range of ages and interests, education programs at the museum are integrated with special exhibits and the permanent collection. Quality programming offer both adults and children a better understanding of the artistic process, along with hands-on creative learning opportunities.
ArtReach is just one example of Philbrook’s innovative educational programming for children. On many school-day afternoons you might see brightly painted school buses lined up in the Philbrook drive, filled with eager and energetic ArtReach students. Launched in 1999, ArtReach, formerly known as Urban Fine Arts Outreach, is an after-school program for third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students in Tulsa Public Schools. A collaborative effort between Philbrook Museum of Art and Tulsa Public Schools, ArtReach is designed to help bridge the gap in arts education offered to children through TPS. Children are selected from the 18 TPS elementary schools that have the fewest visual arts resources available to their students. The program provides 12 hours of visual arts education per year to over 1,000 students through the after-school program, increasing access to arts education for children who might otherwise not have those opportunities. Upon graduation from the program, fifth-grade students have received 36 hours of quality visual arts instruction and museum education.
We are very excited about the recent expansion of our ArtReach program, which is projected to double the number of students currently served by the program. Spot’s Suitcase: Discovering Stories from around the World, was piloted in the fall of 2007 and is a new in-school component of ArtReach. Eighteen additional elementary schools are being offered this multi-visit, theme-based program for third-grade students, which will be implemented during school hours. Philbrook educators and teaching artists provide students with a pre- and post-visit to the classroom and a specially-designed interactive tour of Philbrook’s collection.
With your funding support Philbrook will continue to provide quality arts education for our community. Arts education offers individuals a heightened awareness and appreciation for the diversity of people, places, and other cultures. Quality visual arts education expands perspectives, sparks imagination, and empowers people to view the world around them with a new sense of understanding. Just ask our ArtReach students. Once you’ve seen the museum through their eyes, it will never look the same!
