African Art

Many traditional African cultures believe that all things are possessed with a spirit, including wood used to carve figures and masks. Such carvings convey the authority and status of their owners while others serve utilitarian functions. The Philbrook collection displays the essential characteristics of African sculpture; visual expressions of ritual, prestige, everyday life and religious beliefs.
