Summer Art Camp 2008

Morning Classes: 9am – Noon. Afternoon Classes: 1pm – 4pm.
Cost per class -$225/member, $265/not-yet member
Lunch Supervision: Noon – 1pm, $25.00/member, $30.00/not-yet member (per 2 week session)

Classes
Printmaking , Pressed and Rolled
Teaching Artist – Kelly Foshee
This fun class will explore many different types of printmaking including block prints, collographs, monoprints, silkscreens, bookmaking and stamping. All processes are water-based and non toxic.
Looking for Leonardo
Teaching Artist – Kelly Foshee
Travel back in time to study art and architecture of the Italian Renaissance and be immersed in the ways of the Old Masters. Students will make their own frescos, sculpt with clay, draw, emboss metals and create many more exciting projects.
Give Me Five, Mixed Media
Teaching Artist – Rhonda Friday
It’s multi cultural and multi-media all in one class. Enjoy meeting interesting artists from five different cultures through the art of mixed media. Students will then create their own original and exciting pieces of art out of many different types of art materials.
Multi Media Explorations
Teaching Artist – Kath Gordon
Inspired by the permanent collections and the special exhibitions, students will create dynamic two and three dimensional works of art using clay, plaster, wire, paint and printmaking in their exploration of art.
Color Collage Explosion
Teaching Artist – Rhonda Davis
Students will create a range of self portraits, abstracts, landscapes and masterpieces from the museum by cutting and tearing painted, textured and patterned paper. With inspiration from students, shapes, colors and design will come alive.
A Million Miles of Line
Teaching Artist – Rhonda Davis
Young artists will enjoy this dynamic approach to learning the excitement of drawing. With pencils, pens and brushes, we'll draw from the many galleries and gardens of Philbrook.
Chinese Brushwork Painting
Teaching Artist – Beverly Herndon
Students will enjoy the ancient art of oriental brushwork on rice paper with bamboo brushes. Ink and watercolor techniques will be demonstrated along with an exciting variety of subject matter.
Colorful Clay Creations
Teaching Artist – Virginia Harrison
Students will explore handbuilding techniques in clay with an emphasis on form, creativity and personal expression. Bright and fun glazes will be used to created original pieces of art.
The Art of Papermaking
Teaching Artist – Kathleen Pendergrass
Students will explore the many exciting ways of making paper, marbling paper, creating collages and book making techniques. All handmade paper will be used to create original works of art.
Creative Clay Works
Teaching Artist- Lisa Zarrow
Philbrook’s collection of art and the gardens will be used for inspiration in creating colorful clay projects such as teapots, totem poles and garden sculptures.
Shape & Space, the Elements of Art
Teaching Artist – Lisa Zarrow
This fun multi-media class will focus on creating 3-d sculptures from 2-d designs. Students will work with clay, plaster, wood and wire to create whimsical objects, kaleidoscopes, mosaics and mobiles.
Art around the World
Teaching Artist – Kristal Tomshany
Experience art through many different cultures from Africa to China. This class offers lots of variety with group projects, personal art pieces and a multitude of art materials to work with.
Max & the Magic Picture Frame
Teaching Artist – Kristal Tomshany
Paintings become real in the world of Max where students learn about color and composition. Each child will create a portfolio of colorful paintings designed to fit inside their own handmade magic picture frame.

Session 1: June 16-27
5-6 year old classes
• Exploring Native American Art (Mornings) – campers will draw inspiration from Philbrook’s extensive Native American Art collection, including the new Adkins Collection. Projects will include pottery, weaving and beading.
• Mix it Up with Mixed Media (Afternoons) – Students will explore a wide variety of art materials in creating their original works of art. Media will include collage, painting, printmaking and clay.

7-8 year old classes

5-6 year old classes
• Exploring the Gardens (Mornings) – visit the beautiful gardens for inspiration in creating works of art back in the studio. Media will include photography, sculpture, painting and more.
Pop Art (Afternoons) – Students will tour the permanent collection of Philbrook for inspiration then put a more contemporary “Pop” spin on their own artwork.

7-8 year old classes

Session 3: July 21 – Aug 1

5-6 year old classes
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (Morning) – One man’s trash is another’s treasure. Students will create unique pieces of artwork using recyclable materials and their imagination. Campers are welcome to bring any extra recycled supplies to use in their artwork.
The Shape of Things, Elements and Principles of Art (Afternoons) – Learn how artists use the elements and principles of art to create their artwork. Students will paint, sculpt, print and draw their own original art pieces in this class.

7-8 year old classes

5-6 year old classes
• 3-D Fabulous Forms (Mornings) – Students will learn to sculpt and construct art pieces to create 3-dimensional works of art out of many different types of materials.
The Art of Illustration (Afternoons) – Campers will create their own book from beginning to end. Begin by writing a story, illustrating it and then bind your book to finish. Other projects will be inspired by illustrators of children’s books.

7-8 year old classes

Heyman Family Adventures in Art: Explore Art

Texture Rubbings

Date: Saturday, May 17, 2008

Guest Artist – Mary Jane Porter

Families with children ages 6-12 years (children may attend without accompanying adults)


Spring is a beautiful time to visit the gardens to look for objects with texture. Return to the studio to create a collage with oil pastels, paint and textured surfaces.

Mary Jane Porter is a skilled painter, whose work is exhibited nationwide. She teaches at Tulsa Community College and holds a MA from the University of Tulsa.

Students $5 member; $7 not yet a member
Students with adult $10 member; $12 not yet a member

Finger Puppets

Visit the handmade dolls in the Native American exhibition for ideas to create finger puppets made out of mixed media.

Coloring the In-Between Spaces of Landscapes

Date: Saturday, May 31, 2008
Times: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Guest Artist – Rhonda Davis

Families with children ages 6-12 years (children may attend without accompanying adults)

This class focuses on positive and negative space in landscapes. Study the gardens and the exhibition Painting the Italian Landscape: Views from the Uffizi to create beautiful landscapes in oil pastels.

Rhonda Davis uses the figure and still life as a point of departure for her drawings and acrylic paintings. She currently teaches art at Tulsa Community College and holds a BA in Art History and MA from the University of Tulsa.

Students $5 member; $7 not yet a member

Terrific Textiles

Taking inspiration from Philbrook’s collection of Native American textiles, students will create their own unique textile design by printing on paper with various stamps and textures.

Lisa Zarrow is a jewelry artist, photographer and ceramicist and has taught students of all ages. She received her BA in art history from Arizona State University and is a Precious Metal Clay Certified Senior Instructor, as well as a certified graphic and web designer.

No pre-registration is required, but adults must sign students in at front desk. Students must be enrolled by 1:15 p.m.

Family Fun Guest Artist: Kathleen Pendergrass is a studio artist, teaching artist and former supervisor of the Johnson Atelier Fine Arts Center. Her focus areas are pottery, handmade paper and fiber arts.
